Bequest of Veljko and Mara Petrović

Veljko Petrović (Sombor, 1884 - Belgrade, 1967), a writer, was one
of the most important representatives of Post-realism in Serbian
literature. He wrote mostly about Vojvodina, its ambience and people.
He was a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, a
President of the publishing houses "Matica srpska" in Novi Sad and
"Srpska književna zadruga" in Belgrade, and a long-term
director of the National Museum in Belgrade.
He was the author of numerous articles and studies on literature and art and a winner of the Yugoslav Writers' Association award.
Mara Petrović, the wife of Veljko Petrović, bequeathed on 28th May
1970 to the City of Belgrade his personal library consisting of some
3.200 titles, his manuscripts,
correspondence and other documents, photographs, orders and different
personal items, as well as the collection comprising some 390 works of
art, which adorned their home in Teodora Drajzera St. 32.
The bequest of Veljko Petrović was never opened to the public and today is in a quite neglected state.
Belgrade Heritage House cares has been caring for the bequest since
June 2007.
For 2008 i 2009 sanation of the house should be started so the object
could be transformed into a new home of Veljko and Mara Petrović but
also into a house for writers of Belgrade and the whole world.
